H5N2 Bird Flu Variant Detected in Human for First Time
Global Health Concerns Rise as Avian Influenza Spreads
Human Case Confirmed Amidst US Outbreaks
The United States is currently experiencing outbreaks of avian influenza, also known as bird flu. Amidst these outbreaks, a concerning development has emerged: the first laboratory-confirmed human case of the H5N2 bird flu variant.
The H5N2 subtype is a type of avian influenza virus that affects a wide range of birds, including chickens. While avian influenza viruses typically infect birds, this variant has made the jump to humans. As of March 2022, there have been no cases reported outside the United States.
Global health experts are expressing concerns about the emergence of H5N2 in humans. The most common avian influenza viruses that have caused human infections are H5, H7, and H9 viruses. Of these, H5 viruses, including H5N2, have been responsible for the most severe and fatal cases.
