The Proboscis Monkey: A Unique Primate with a Distinctive Nose
A Closer Look at the Proboscis Monkey
The Proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) is a large, arboreal primate native to the rainforests of Borneo. Known for its distinctive, elongated nose, this monkey species is one of the most striking and recognizable animals in the region.
Males of the Proboscis monkey are considerably larger than females, with an average length of 70 cm and a weight ranging from 16 to 22 kg. Females, on the other hand, measure approximately 60 cm in length and weigh between 7 and 12 kg.
The Proboscis monkey's most notable feature is its long nose, which can reach up to 17 cm in length in males. This nose is thought to serve several functions, including attracting mates, regulating body temperature, and enhancing social interactions.
